1.Dynasty: Ruling Family
2.Porcelain: ceramics used to make dishes
3.Calligraphy: Artistic Handwriting
4.Civil Service Exam: A test taken in Imperial China to select people to work in government jobs
5.Confucianism: philosophy from China that focused on honoring the government and family
6.Buddhism: religion in which the goal is enlightenment and acceptance
7.Missionary: A person that spreads a religious message
8.Gunpowder: Invention from China that was later used to created explosives and weapons
Japan Vocabulary
Archipelago-chain of islands, runs North & South in the Pacific Ocean
Animism-Japanese believed humans, animals, plants, rocks, and rivers all have their own spirits
Kami-nature spirits. People believed they could call on them for help
Aristocracy-Families of nobles (people in the upper class) that lived in Chinese-style homes during the Nara Period
Feudalism-The bond of loyalty between a lord and a vassal (samurai that owns land)
Daimyo-Powerful military lords. They obey the emperor and shoguns
Shogun-Commander of military forces
Samurai-Nobles gave land to them in return for being a warrior in battles
